Day 2 took us 12.4 miles from Newcastle to Heddon-on-the-Wall. So far this has been an urban hike — some of it quite beautiful, but almost exclusively on paved surfaces. These ranged from well-used local paths along the River Tyne and through community parks and gardens to the less appealing walks along busy highways and spanning bridges across these highways.

Interestingly, there are few sightings of Hadrian’s Wall yet as most of the original wall has been built or paved over in this urban environment. That made Segedunum Fort at Hadrian’s Wall Mile Zero so interesting because the entire layout of a Roman fort of the time has been excavated and preserved.
Paving aside, we made it to the English countryside today (complete with sheep, horses, and freshly harvested hay) as well as the promise of a piece of the excavated wall as we leave Heddon tomorrow.
