Today was the perfect day to start our Hadrian’s Wall hike. We wanted to make this a true coast-to-coast journey so we started from the coastal town of Tynemouth. This is a bit farther east than Hadrian’s Wall mile zero and where the River Tyne empties into the North Sea.
Tynemouth, a human settlement since the Iron Age, is a picturesque village anchored at its east end by the Tynemouth Priory and Castle. The church was part of a Benedictine monastery founded in the 11th century and ordered closed by King Henry VIII in 1530, although it continued to be occupied. It was a major coastal fort protecting the mouth of the Tyne River for more than 400 years.
After coffee at a local café, it was time to start walking. We had 8 miles of cool, sunny, blustery weather from Tynemouth to Wallsend and our official start on the Hadrian’s Wall Path. We picked up our Hadrian’s Wall passports, got our first stamps, and walked another 5.8 miles back to our hotel in Newcastle.
We are a little stiff, but no worse for the wear. Tomorrow morning we head to Heddon-on-the-Wall. Hope you enjoy the photos and video below.

There are blackberries for miles! It’s been fun seeing locals with their bags picking them. I’ve picked a few, and they are delish.
