Today was the best and the hardest hiking day so far. Best because we walked along intact portions on the wall, its turrets, forts, and nearby temples for much of the day. Our elevation was high enough to really take in the landscape around us, and it is stunning! Our experience today was every bit as powerful and beautiful as we imagined it could be.
But the 13.8 miles we hiked were the most challenging so far.
Because all day the wind was strong, relentless, and never at our backs. Think strong enough to push you off balance.
Because the ascents (and descents) were steep, long, and often rocky (the Romans were clearly strategic in choosing their military locations).
And because it rained on and off all afternoon and heavily for the last hour of the hike.
That said, it was a sweet day. Our bed-and-breakfast host met us at her front door, giving us a basket to for wet clothes so she could dry them for us. We had a yummy dinner, and we are looking forward to tomorrow.
